| When good musicians get together, no matter what their genre or musical preferences, they can make something happen. Maybe it will not be the pinnacle of their careers, but if all of them have something to say and there is a sense of common purpose between them, there will be musical results and it will be beautiful to listen to. Music, however, is not just for good musicians. Music is for all of us. That is why, in a church group, it is important to have the right accompaniment music.
Many people take gospel accompaniment for granted. You see, in gospel music there is almost complete emphasis on the vocals. We worship the lord with our voices, not our accompaniment music. Therefore, people tend to notice the vocal part a whole lot more than the musical accompaniment. The accompaniment music, however, is a part of making a joyous noise just as much as the vocals. Anyone who has ever done karaoke knows that accompaniment music is important, but few people really think about its use in the church. In karaoke singing, you get to perform some of your favorite pop songs with a sound track behind you. If there were no soundtrack, there would be no performance. This soundtrack, whether it is provided by piano, by a whole band, or by a tape recorded track, is every bit as important in sacred music. It is the only way to keep people all together within the church. Using accompaniment music tells people when to start and to stop a song, how fast they should sing it, and what kind of energy they should put into it. Although almost any accompaniment music will do to keep people together, you would be amazed at the great difference that will be made by using high energy music to get everyone going. For example, we used to use a recorded accompaniment in our church because we were much too poor to hire a full time band. Then, one day, we were fortunate enough to get some church members who were willing to volunteer to play for us during the services. You would not believe how it got people jumping and moving to the music. It was quite an amazing thing for anyone to see. The lord finds each of us individually and in his own way, but to inspire us as a group, music seems to be one of his favorite tools.
